"President Truman Dedicates Giant Dams" The Baxter Bulletin
Baxter County Bulletin
This is the front page of the July 2, 1952, Baxter Bulletin, a weekly publication out of Mountain Home, covering President Harry S. Truman’s visit to state for the dedication of Bull Shoals dam on the border of Marion and Baxter Counties in Arkansas, and Norfork dam, southeast of Mountain Home in Baxter County.
The dedication of Bull Shoals dam marked a major point in the damming of the White River. My grandfather, Samuel Hamblen “Ham” Cole, was one of the engineers on both dams. I grew up hearing my mother’s, Aunt Sarah’s and grandmother’s stories of living in the Government Village at Mountain Home during both dams' construction. Bull Shoals itself was one of the largest concrete structures until 2009. -Jane Wilkerson
