This lesson plan will introduce students to the types of foods common to people living in the territory and state that would become Arkansas by the third decade of the 19th century. Students will explore the origins of these foods and how they were introduced to the region. Additionally, students will examine images of common instruments used in food preparation during this time period, and discuss how these implements would have been used and what skills these early Arkansas residents would have needed to prepare food. Students will also research and discuss the origins of traditional “Arkansas foods” that we still consume today through recording and transcription of a family or community recipe.
